About Swanee River
Swanee River is a blend of soul, blues and rock and roll. Hailing from the city of Derry, they began in September 2004 and drew their influences from a range of bands including Free, Led Zeppelin, Spencer Davis Group, Rory Gallagher, Humble Pie and Terry Reid.

Swanee River began late in 2004 and quickly got on to the touring circuit playing 200 gigs in 2 years with Quigley and Quigley on drums and guitars. They quickly built up a stronglive reputation which climaxed when they came first out of 200 bands in 2006 and won the Northern Ireland Battle of the bands competition, beating an early ‘General Fiasco’ and Chadsko to take the cool £1000 prize money. With blistering onstage shows, the band quickly became highly sought after as one of NI’s –one to watch. They knew it was time to step things up a gear, both with writing and onstage performance.
Shortly after that, in the summer ’06 the band said goodbye to Kevin Quigley and Pearse Quigley and the band took a 9 month break writing, heavily reheasing and adding to the Swanee sound with new guitarist Graham (ragin bap) Baldrick and Connor (coco) McAuley on drums who were long established on the scene before joining Swanee River.
By May ’07 the band felt ready to once again take NI by storm and sold out a string on small club dates across NI and some key supports in the South with the likes of Jaded Sun.
2008 saw them up the game even more by supporting the likes of ‘Taste’, ‘Henry McCullough’ and playing a festival Bill with ASH in the summer ’08. Though it wasn’t until 2009 with the release of their 3rd and highly anticipated EP ‘Kick Off Yer Cloggs’ when things started to really happen.
In April 2009 they were included on the cover mount CD of Classic Rock’s US/Rest of World edition of the magazine and also won an online competition with the magazine to secure being included on the cover mount of a UK edition in August/September. They were also included on the covermount of Hotpress magazine as a build up to Glasgowbury music festival.
In June 2009 they played a selection of high profile shows with ‘The Answer’, UFO and Taste and also a few sessions for BBC radio 1 and BBC radio Ulster ATL that same summer.
The highlight of the summer came through at Glasgowbury festival in July where they rammed a tent for a blistering performance regarded by many as one of the all time highlights in the festivals history. On the same day they recorded two exclusive acoustic tracks live for BBC Radio 1 and Stevie was asked personally by Henry McCullough and the festival organisers to top the bill on the Spurs of Rock stage alongside him finishing his set with the Joe Cocker version of ‘A little Help From My Friends’ which McCullough hadn’t played since Woodstock with Joe himself!!
November saw them perform on BBC ATL show feature 'Raw Money' and also saw them included in an advertising campaign for Microsoft Windows
In 2009 things looked like they couldn’t get much better for Swanee, though they did, and came in the form of a personal invitation from The Answer to play main support on their December sold out ULSTER HALL gig!! The BBC spoke to Swanee River after the show back stage, which went out live on the ‘Across The Line’ show about how they felt about playing Northern Ireland’s greatest venue. Well, the feeling was like something the band had never experienced before, I mean, this was the venue that Led zeppelin played ‘Stairway to heaven’ for the very first time!!
2010 seems to be the year set for Swanee River to do great things, there is rumours of an album and huge UK tours so keep tuned in to swanee-river.com for all the info!!
It is onwards and upwards for Swanee River eventually as they have sat far too long in the shadows as Irelands best kept secret.
